The Moranbah CSG development story: Introduction

What we did and why

The Moranbah CSG development story has been created to understand the impacts on Moranbah from coal seam gas (CSG) development. Moranbah's experience during this period can be attributed to changes in the coal mining industry much more than to CSG development in the area.  Our research has been done with the help of key members of the Moranbah and district community, including:

  • Real estate agents
  • Hospitality and other local business managers
  • Police
  • Staff from schools
  • Welfare agencies
  • Union staff
  • Local and State government staff

These people were presented with statistical data on ‘indicators’ of social and economic impact. The ‘indicators’ are:

  1. Population
  2. Unemployment
  3. Income & Wages
  4. Business income
  5. Housing
  6. Selected offences recorded by police
  7. Rainfall
  8. Petrol prices

Working with our researchers, the people interviewed in Moranbah discussed the accuracy of the statistical data from a local perspective. That was done in research interviews. More information about the interviews is available here.

Through the interviews, a local perspective on the Moranbah CSG development story was created.  From working with the Moranbah community, here is what we found for our 2015 Annual Report.  An update for 2016 is due here shortly, in June 2017.

The CSG development stories for other towns are available here.
