The Dysart CSG development story: Introduction

What we did and why

The Dysart CSG development story has been created to understand the impacts on Dysart during the period of coal seam gas (CSG) development. In reality, key changes can be attributed to nearby coal mining more than to CSG development in the area.  Our research has been done with the help of key members of the Dysart and district community, including:

  • Chamber of Commerce members
  • Real estate agents
  • Hotels, motels and other local business managers
  • Police
  • Staff from schools
  • Employment agencies
  • Local and State government staff

These people were presented with statistical data on ‘indicators’ of social and economic impact. The ‘indicators’ are:

  1. Population
  2. Unemployment
  3. Income
  4. Business income
  5. Housing
  6. Top offences recorded by police
  7. Rainfall
  8. Petrol prices

Working with our researchers, the people interviewed in Dysart discussed the accuracy of the statistical data from a local perspective. That was done in research interviews. More information about the interviews is available here.

Through the interviews, a local perspective on the Dysart CSG development story was created.  From working with the Dysart community, here is what we found for our 2015 Annual Report.  An update for 2016 is due here shortly, in June 2017.

The CSG development stories for other towns are available here.
